Virginia La Torre Jeker, J.D.

Virginia is a specialist in United States taxation as it relates to international issues for both US and non-US individuals.  She is one of a very few US tax attorneys in the Gulf Region. Here is some background about Virginia La Torre Jeker -

Commencing my legal career with the New York law firm, Willkie Farr & Gallagher, I gained extensive experience in US corporate and individual tax planning and legal advice. When I moved to Hong Kong in 1986, my expertise expanded into the area of international tax planning and related legal documentation with Coudert Brothers, an international law firm; consulting work for the Hong Kong office of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, several major banks, including HSBC in Hong Kong and several tax advisory firms. My work with these institutions, and in Dubai has involved US tax issues for foreign investors in the US property or general investment market; pre-immigration tax planning for those considering US green cards or citizenship; tax and State Department issues for those giving up US citizenship or long-term green cards; tax issues for Americans living and working overseas, tax and FBAR noncompliance matters and offshore account issues including IRS Voluntary Disclosure and Streamlined initiatives; “Controlled Foreign Corporations” and “Passive Foreign Investment Companies”; trust and estate tax issues for high net worth individuals; general income, gift and estate tax planning; and US and international taxation planning especially for expatriates and multi-national clients.

Born in New York, I obtained my Juris Doctor from UCLA School of Law and am a member of the New York Bar since 1984.  I am also admitted to practice before the US Tax Court. Commencing 1986, I lived and worked in Hong Kong until 2001, when I moved to Dubai where I have continued practicing US and international taxation. I speak at numerous conferences and seminars for various institutes and commercial organizations; publish a vast array of scholarly works in my area of expertise, been interviewed by CNN and am regularly quoted (or have my articles featured) in local and international publications. I have been quoted in the New York Times and some of my writings have been submitted to the Senate Finance Committee of the US Congress by parties seeking changes to the US tax laws as they affect Americans overseas.

I am the author of Let’s Talk About US Tax, a tax blog for AngloInfo. My blog receives on average 30,000 page views a month and has at least weekly US tax blog postings. I was appointed to the Professional Tax Advisory Council, American Citizens Abroad, Geneva, Switzerland and am one of its most active members. I was a guest lecturer at the University of Hong Kong, LL.M Program (Law Department) and served as an adjunct Business Law professor at the American University of Dubai; taught commercial law and the legal / ethical aspects of internet law and internet based transactions at the School of Business Administration at the American University of Sharjah.
